Changing rooms were never something I really gave much thought to until I became a mum. But since having Darcie they have become a subject I feel I could go on endlessly about (I won’t, don’t worry, I know you’re mainly here to win the changing bag!). Well, I’m going to go on just a little bit to introduce this campaign that Sudocrem are running in association with the charity PAMIS (Promoting A More Inclusive Society). I was shocked when I read that there are 800,000 disabled children across the UK and only 1058 Changing Places toilets that meet all of their needs. This leaves many parents having to resort to changing their child on the floor in the toilet, which we all know is not the most hygienic of places at the best of times. I know that when I am out and about with Darcie I will always try to find the best place to take her to change her because it is awful having to change a nappy in unsanitary and smelly conditions. Luckily baby changing facilities on the whole are okay and so I can barely imagine what these parents and children have to go through on a daily basis when they simply need to get them changed.
Since 2012 Sudocrem have been campaigning for change and one of the ways they are doing this is by creating the Changing Room Award scheme to encourage companies to do better. Previous winners include Mothercare, Sainsbury’s and John Lewis, which is my personal fave. The John Lewis parent room in Southampton is where I will always take Darcie if we are close by. There are plenty of changing stations, a toilet big enough to take the pram in with you, a kid size toilet, water dispensers and even little booths you can go into to feed your baby. This is where I always used to go to breastfeed Darcie while I built up my confidence with feeding in public. The whole room is clean and meets all of our needs. It is definitely John Lewis that I will be nominating this year!
There are three awards this year:
Baby Changing Room of the Year
Dad’s Changing Rooms
Changing Places Toilet (in association with PAMIS)
