I’ve had my perm for a few months now and over that time I’ve picked up quite a few curly hair tips that I hope can be helpful for anyone reading this who struggles to maintain their curly hair:
Don’t Overwash It
From experience I’ve found that my curls stay nicer if I wash them less frequently. No matter what products you are using, washing your hair strips lots of the goodness and oils from your hair leaving it drier. The frizzy look isn’t my cup of tea so I tend to wash my hair once or twice a week which is the perfect amount for me and my hair.
Do Your Product Research
We should all be paying attention to what is in the products that we use. But it’s even more important for those of us with curly hair. The last thing you want is products with ingredients that will dry out your hair or weigh down those beautiful curls.
The Curly Girl Method
I’m sure there aren’t many curly girls out there who haven’t heard of the curly girl method, but if you haven’t I would definitely recommend looking it up and seeing how you could apply some of it to your hair care routine. It’s all about helping your curls be the best they can and some of the before and after pictures are just incredible.
Scrunching is the best way to apply product to your hair when it’s wet that will leave you with lovely defined curls. Towel drying is really not a good idea with curly hair, instead get it as dry as you can just by scrunching it with a towel and applying your products of choice.
Diffuse, Diffuse, Diffuse!
If you’re not leaving your hair to dry naturally – let’s be honest most of us don’t have the time for that! – then you’re going to want to make sure you are using a diffuser with your hairdryer. The diffuser will ensure your hair dries evenly and doesn’t become frizzy in the process. Its a quick and easy way to make sure they dry and keep their definition.
Never Brush It Dry
I feel like this one goes without saying but ah well, here I am saying it! Give it a good comb through when it’s wet and then don’t even think about brushing it again until you next wash it. Unless you like the Monica Geller look in which case go right ahead!
Silk Pillow or Hair Wrap
If you’ve ever wanted an excuse to invest in some silk bedding – this is it! Sleeping on a silk pillow case will really help your curls keep their definition overnight and prevent it from frizzing as you sleep. If you don’t fancy the silk pillows, then a different option would be to get a hair wrap to protect your curls.
I’m still a newbie to the curly girl world so I would love to hear your tips or any product recommendations you might have. I think curly hair is so beautiful and it’s amazing to see more and more people embracing their curls at the moment.
