My Breastfeeding Essentials

Now don’t get me wrong, I am very much a ‘all you really need to breastfeed is a boob’ kinda gal. However, I do often get asked about my tips for breastfeeding so I thought this post would be a good place to start. I was also inspired after reading this list of breastfeeding essentials from Smart Cells, to share my own. Expectant mums just love a list of things to buy, it helps us to feel prepared for the new baby. Breastfeeding is often a big scary unknown for a first time mum and so feeling prepared for it can really help you to feel less daunted by it all. I also want to say at this point, please don’t feel daunted or scared at the thought of breastfeeding! Yes, it can be a minefield but there is a lot of good support and advice out there so don’t be afraid to hunt it down. I’m currently three months into breastfeeding my second baby and I breastfed my first for sixteen months, so it ‘s fair to say I’ve been around the breastfeeding block. I’ve tried a lot of products throughout that time and these are my one hundred percent honest and unbiased recommendations for you.

Carriwell Seamless GelWire Nursing Bra Review

Boobs. Some people’s favourite subject but even though I own a perfectly good pair, it’s really not one of mine. I’ve always been quite ‘anti-boob’ (is that a thing?) and generally found them to be pretty annoying; they get in the way, don’t look how I want them to in certain outfits and worst of all is bra shopping! Trying to find the perfect bra that fits well, is comfortable and looks good has always been mission impossible to me. And pregnancy and breastfeeding has only made things worse! When Carriwell offered to send me the Seamless GelWire Nursing Bra to try out, a mixture of thoughts ran through my mind. The first was ‘thank god! I don’t have to physically go out and hunt for this bra!’ and the second was ‘but how on earth am I supposed to know which size I am?!’ After some careful consideration I chose my size and it turns out I needn’t have worried! It fits like an absolute dream and is honestly the most comfortable and supportive bra I’ve probably ever worn. I mentioned this bra in my post on Preparing for Postpartum & Breastfeeding | The Products but now that I have tested it out I thought it was time for a full review.

Preparing for Postpartum & Breastfeeding | The Products

Following the success of my post on Preparing for a Newborn I thought I would put together a similar list of some of the products that I have for myself once Ernie is born. A lot of these will be breastfeeding related and also there are just some general postpartum items on here that will hopefully be useful to someone reading this. It’s so important to remember to look after yourself when you’ve just had a baby. Yes, your priority will be on the baby, but be kind to yourself too. Your body has just undergone one of the most traumatic experiences and it’s important to take care of yourself as a priority too. So these are some of the things that I am hoping will ease me into postpartum life:

What’s In My Hospital Bag? | Back To Basics

When I was preparing to have my first baby, I read so many of these ‘What’s In My Hospital Bag? posts online. It must be one of the most googled questions in every pregnant woman’s search history – what on earth do I take with me to have this baby?! This time around, rather than spending too long reading other people’s lists I have simply drawn on my own experience from last time. I’ve tried to remember the things that I was really glad I had with me and the things that I really wished I had taken. I think that compared to a lot of lists online this is quite a simple one. What I have decided to take has been based on the fact that this is my second child and my first labour and delivery had no complications, therefore I have no intention of staying in the birth centre any longer than necessary.

My Maternity Favourites

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while now, but what with being pregnant and looking after a toddler, time has somehow managed to slip away from me in that way that it always does! In a way it is good that I am writing this at 34 weeks pregnant as I have now had almost my entire pregnancy to think about what have been my favourite maternity items and products throughout this time. It’s so easy to spend your pregnancy thinking solely about the arrival of your little one, after all that is the most exciting part! But it’s also important to remember to look after yourself while you are doing the most important job of all – growing your baby. Most of these items are related to being comfortable and treating yourself, which are obviously two very important things for any expecting mum. Continue reading “My Maternity Favourites”

Pickle & Squidge Mummy To Be Box Review

Pregnancy is hard and being a new Mum is even harder. When Kate, founder of the Pickle & Squidge Mummy To Be Boxes, realised this she decided to create a product to make that transition into Motherhood that little bit smoother. The Mummy To Be Boxes were inspired by Kate’s own transition to Motherhood back in 2013. All those sleepless nights left her with time to think and be inspired to create the Pickle & Squidge brand. The Mummy To Be Boxes contain everything that Kate herself found essential during those first few months of Motherhood (and beyond!), for both mum and baby. What To Expect When You Stop Breastfeeding

IMG_7787

I‘d like to start with a disclaimer to my Dad, any other men who might be readers of my blog and anyone else who isn’t in the mood for boob chat, this one isn’t for you. No need to read, just click away now…

One other side note before we continue: I wrote this post many, many months ago now but I was unable to share it due to my pregnancy being unannounced. Since then I have updated it slightly so that it makes more sense to my current life. As with everything I write, this is just my experience and opinions so bare that in mind when reading.

Right, if there is anyone still reading here we go. Continue reading “What To Expect When You Stop Breastfeeding”

#ThankYouMidwife

For the month of December Pampers are running a #ThankYouMidwife campaign across social media. The idea behind the campaign came from research that showed that unfortunately one in three midwives feel undervalued. So Pampers have decided to donate £1 to the Royal College of Midwives Benevolent fund for every time the #ThankYouMidwife hashtag is used across social media. I have been seeing all sorts of wonderful posts online dedicated to the fantastic work our midwives do all day every day and have been inspired to write my own tribute to all the midwives who played a part in my pregnancy, labour, delivery and aftercare. Self Soothing, No Tears

pexels-photo-54547.jpegMy daughter has recently turned 18 months old and I really can’t quite believe it. But the thing that actually shocks me more than her ever changing age is the fact that she has finally learnt to self soothe and put herself to sleep. For some people this will seem an odd thing to say. There are the people whose babies have been settling themselves to sleep since day dot, then there are the people who did sleep training to achieve this result and then there are the rest of us. The ‘I can’t bring myself to do sleep training so I’ll just accept a lifetime of little to no sleep and hope for the best’ gang.  Continue reading “Self Soothing, No Tears”

Toddler’s Bedtime Routine // Seventeen Months Old

I’m always really intrigued to know other peoples bedtimes routines with their babies and toddlers. It’s good to get tips from each other and hear about what works and what definitely doesn’t. We’ve had basically the same bedtime routine with Darcie for what feels like her whole life but it has of course developed and changed as she has. At nearly eighteen months she is still not a fantastic sleeper, but when you’re that cute already, why would you need any more beauty sleep? However I am really happy with our bedtime routine and she does generally fall asleep easily, even if she does then wake in the night, although this is improving in leaps and bounds these days. I do use the term ‘routine’ loosely as I take a very baby led approach and so our days do vary depending on her and also on what we might have done that day or be doing that evening.
