Dear Darcie, I Won’t Push You Away

Dear Darcie,

As you may have realised by now, there are going to be some big changes in the next month or so. We’ve been talking to you about ‘Baby Ernie’ for a while now, and telling you all about how there will be a new baby soon. We’ve told you about how amazing it will be and how you will have a friend for life. This will be the most amazing change for our family, but still, it will be a change. I’m really not too worried about how you will adapt to life with a baby brother. You have adapted to every change so far in your life and flourished with every new phase you have entered. You’ve actually been loving helping us to prepare for your brother even if you didn’t realise that’s what we were doing. You’ve been putting your teddies in his cot ‘for the baby’, pretending to paint the walls of the nursery and even ‘helping’ me pick out his tiny clothes. Dear Darcie, Now You Are Two

Dear Darcie,

Today you turn two! (I’m posting this a week late because I’m forcing myself to stop editing it now. It will never be as perfect as I want it to be, it will never be as perfect as you or as perfect as you deserve, but I hope that one day when you read it, you’ll like it anyway).

I just read back over the letter I wrote to you a year ago today on your first birthday. At the end I wrote ‘You will grow and you will change, but please stay sweet, stay kind and stay you.’ That is exactly what you have done. You have stayed sweet, and you have stayed kind and you are still very much the you that you were last year (just with a little bit more sass!). You have changed and grown so much. I can see it happening right before my eyes and yet you are still so similar in so many ways to the person you were a year ago. Continue reading “Dear Darcie, Now You Are Two”

Dear Darcie, You Make Me Better

Today is International Women’s Day and I’ve been loving it. All day today I have seen inspiring messages from both men and women about women who inspire them, motivate them and educate them. I love that we have a day all about celebrating women and so I wanted to write a post of my own, to mark this day. Last year I wrote International Women’s Day// The Things I Want to Teach My Daughter and so this year I wanted to look at it from the other side. This is a letter to Darcie, my darling daughter. This is a thank you for all of the things that you have taught me and shown me so far in your little lifetime. Continue reading “Dear Darcie, You Make Me Better”

Dear Darcie, Little, Tiny, Big Sister

16th October 2017

Dear Darcie,

Today something really special happened. You won’t understand it at all yet but today I told you something amazing, something you definitely don’t hear every day. I told you that you are going to be a big sister. I showed you a blue and white stick that had two lines on it, one very faint but definitely there, and I cried and told you how amazing it is and that Mummy is going to give you a best friend for life. You looked at me as I cried tears of happiness and you laughed and tried to grab the stick and put it in your mouth, that made me laugh and then we were both laughing while I was still crying. Dear Darcie, This Is The Last Time

IMG_5641Dear Darcie,

Tonight I fed you for the last time. Don’t worry, you’ll still be getting solid food and coconut milk and all of your favourite things but this is the last time you’ll have my milk. This moment has been gradually approaching for months and I know in my heart that you are ready to stop now. I think that really you have been ready for a while and that it was me that needed to carry on. I really needed you to keep needing me. I wanted to keep providing you with the one thing that only I can provide. Or so I thought. But as I sit here now, holding your soft warm little body in my arms, I realise that it’s not true. There are so many other things that only I can do for you, because I am your Mum and that is something that nobody else can ever be. Continue reading “Dear Darcie, This Is The Last Time”
