I’ve been meaning to write this post for a while now, but what with being pregnant and looking after a toddler, time has somehow managed to slip away from me in that way that it always does! In a way it is good that I am writing this at 34 weeks pregnant as I have now had almost my entire pregnancy to think about what have been my favourite maternity items and products throughout this time. It’s so easy to spend your pregnancy thinking solely about the arrival of your little one, after all that is the most exciting part! But it’s also important to remember to look after yourself while you are doing the most important job of all – growing your baby. Most of these items are related to being comfortable and treating yourself, which are obviously two very important things for any expecting mum. Continue reading “My Maternity Favourites”
There is so much pressure out there to love your pregnant body. We see it everywhere, from advertising campaigns for maternity wear to the mum you barely know at baby group telling you how marvellous the pregnant form is. And don’t get me wrong, I think it’s wonderful that we are encouraged to celebrate the changes that are happening to our bodies as they grow beautiful healthy babies and prepare to give birth. But what about when you just don’t love your pregnant body? What if no matter how hard you try, you just can’t? What about the days when you feel huge and swollen and yet the world is still insisting that you celebrate? And on those days, funnily enough, having a perfect stranger tell you (directly or indirectly) that you must love your pregnant body -doesn’t help. I hated my body during pregnancy the first time around, and so this time I was more determined than ever to try to celebrate it. Frankly, that hasn’t gone to plan and I’m sitting here feeling as if I resemble a whale and mourning the time when my clothes actually fit me. I know, I know. I’m 33 weeks pregnant and only just getting around to sitting down and writing my second trimester update. (Sort it out Hanna!). I know I’ll kick myself if I don’t record this pregnancy on here, time is running away from me so I’m really going to try to include more pregnancy related content over the next couple of months. I could come up with a million excuses as to why my pregnancy content has been lacking but I think it basically comes down to the fact that this is my second pregnancy, and to be honest most of the time I forget that I am even pregnant at all! Writing about it doesn’t even occur to me because it’s not new to me this time. That has been the main thing that has really struck me throughout this pregnancy, it is SO similar to my first. Unless I’m about to have the surprise of my life when I give birth, you can forget all those myths about how different it is being pregnant with a boy or a girl. For me, it’s been virtually identical.
I can’t quite believe that my little baby girl will be turning two next weekend. What I probably should be doing with this little bit of time is organising her party, ordering decorations and thinking about what cake I’m going to make her. But that would make it all seem a bit too real. So, instead of looking forward, I’m going to stick firmly in the present and write down my favourite things about my favourite little person at 23 months old. I haven’t gone back and checked my list from last month so it’s possible there could be some overlaps but some things are just so sweet they deserve to be mentioned again! Continue reading “My Favourite Things About Darcie at 23 Months Old”
Every pregnant woman knows the struggle of finding great maternity clothes. It can be hard enough to pull together a small selection of every day outfits that you feel comfortable in, but the struggle really becomes real when you have a special occasion to attend and nothing nice that fits over your bump. I recently had a maternity photo shoot booked in with the lovely Rebecca Frost Photography which I was so excited for but also totally stumped as to what I was going to wear to make me feel special on the day. That’s where Tiffany Rose Maternity stepped in. Tiffany Rose sell a beautiful selection of maternity dresses, from gorgeous and stylish day wear to ‘the dress of your dreams’ bridal wear. Anyone that knows us will know that we love being outdoors. Dan and I are both very outdoorsy people and that has definitely rubbed off on our daughter. Whatever the weather, there will be some activity that Darcie wants to do outside. Whether that’s splashing in the puddles on rainy days or cruising around in her new Cozy Coupe in the sunshine.
We are walking down the road and Darcie, in all her nearly-two-year-old glory, is waving wildly at the traffic, saying ‘Car!’, ‘Car!’, ‘Van!’. To an outsider it could easily look like my toddler is simply excited to show off some new vocabulary. But to me, and to a handful of others, it looks very different. Darcie is using her magic powers to make the cars move. Obviously. She swipes some of them dramatically over her shoulder as they whizz past us and pushes others away from us using her magical hands, her magical gestures and her magical sound effects. To her, she is moving these cars and deciding which direction they go in, and she’s having the best time! Continue reading “My Daughter Has Magical Powers”
I’d like to start this post with a disclaimer. These tips are probably only really going to be helpful to you if you don’t already have a sleepless toddler who likes to clamber into bed with you at 1am. If this is your first baby, then hopefully these tips will help you. If this is your second, then maybe consider palming the toddler off on a friendly relative before you even start kidding yourself that you’re going to get a good night’s sleep! One of my biggest regrets about my first pregnancy is not having any maternity photos taken. I seriously have hardly any photos of me when I was pregnant with Darcie, and the ones that do exist – I really don’t like. I have a few quick snaps from my baby shower or family gatherings, where the angle is all wrong and I just don’t like the way I look in them. I struggle a lot with body image during pregnancy and so I knew that having some nice photos taken during this pregnancy would really help me to feel good about my changing body. I am actually planning a whole post on the subject of body positivity during pregnancy so I’ll save that ramble for another day and for now just tell you all about the lovely experience I had on my maternity photo shoot with the lovely Becky of Rebecca Frost Photography.
Spring seems to be giving us the slip so far this year. We’ve been cooped up because of the bad weather and I know we are both ready for adventures in the sun now. Splashing in the puddles will always be fun, and sledging will hopefully be something we can do again next Winter, but for now I’m ready to say Goodbye to winter coats and drizzly days. Last Summer was when you first starting walking and it was amazing for you to be able to explore and have adventures using your new skill. This year will be even better, you’re not just walking now, you’re running, spinning, jumping and dancing. You love to be outside in the fresh air so I just know that Spring and Summer are the seasons for you.
Welcome to Spring, baby girl.
