It’s easy to lose your sense of style when you become a mum. Being pregnant and breastfeeding both alter the types of clothes you can easily wear, and then when you aren’t pregnant anymore and your baby weans, a lot of us are left feeling a bit lost style-wise. In that time it is likely that fashions will have changed too, which can make it even harder to figure out what you want to wear and what suits you now. When Femme Luxe offered to send me some pieces, it felt like the perfect time to write this post and share some tips with you on how to find your style again after having children.
Don’t Be Afraid To Try Something Different
Let’s be real, motherhood changes you. Not just physically but in every way. Chances are that your lifestyle as a mum will be significantly different to how it was before so bare that in mind when picking out clothes. No – there is no right way for a mum to dress, a mum should wear whatever she feels comfortable and confident in, however consider what your day to day activities are these days before purchasing new items. You want to look good, feel good, and also be able to carry on comfortably with your everyday life.
Ignore Sizes
Really we should all ignore sizing all the time. It can vary so much between different shops which just shows how meaningless the sizes are really! When you’ve had a baby, your body does change. Even the people who ‘snap back’ (who are these people anyway?!) will tell you that there are changes to their bodies now. You can’t expect clothes to fit you the same as they did before so try to let go of worrying about sizing and just go with what looks good.
Try Some New Brands
In the time you’ve been pregnant and postpartum, fashions have changed and chances are there will be some new brands on the block. Femme Luxe isn’t a brand I have ever shopped with before which made me all the most excited to try out some of their clothes.
The first item I chose was this Animal Snake Print PU Corset Top which is honestly so far out of my comfort zone – but I was feeling brave and I’m so glad I went for it as I actually really love it on. Corset style tops are so in style right now and I just think it gives that extra edge to an outfit. I’m excited to keep styling this through into Summer too. I’m imagining it with a tulle Carrie Bradshaw type skirt for a glam event or dressed down with some ripped shorts when it gets warmer.
For Spring, I paired it with these Midwash Distressed Mom Jeans which I think makes the perfect outfit that can be dressed up with a pair of heels and a clutch, or down with a pair of trainers and a leather jacket or cardigan. I don’t like my wardrobe to be too crowded so versatile outfits are definitely my cup of tea.
Next up is this perfect pair of Slim Fit Stone Cargo Trousers. These cargo trousers are perfect for mum life as they are so comfy and versatile. Again, they can be dressed up or down but most importantly – however you want to wear them – they are just so comfortable! The stone colour is perfect for a transitional wardrobe too. These will be getting a lot of use!
And last but not least, I chose this Khaki Cold Shoulder Cut Out Dress. I love the khaki colour of this and the cold shoulder trend hasn’t stopped being cute in my opinions. It’s also another piece that is perfect for dressing up or down. I could easily throw a pair of heels on and head out for drinks with the girls. But equally, it would be a lovely casual outfit too with a white pair of trainers.
Remember To Have Fun With It
My final tip has to be just a reminder that you should enjoy finding your style again. If you’re not enjoying something or if a trend just isn’t working for you then let it go and move onto the next thing. Finding your style isn’t just about finding a great pair of trousers or a fabulous dress – it’s about finding your confidence and sense of self again. Don’t feel like you have to stick to what you know or follow the crowd. You should do you, that’s the only way you’ll ever figure it out!
