Updating Ernie’s bedroom has been on the to do list for a very long time. There have been so many times over the last couple of years when it has nearly been the top priority, and then something else has come along and it’s slipped down the list again. But now the time has finally arrived. He’s due to start school (next week – ahhhh!!) and so it feels like the perfect time to give him a more grown up bedroom.
Choosing A Theme
I’d had an idea of the style and theme I wanted to go for in mind for a while, so it was really fun to finally bring it to life for him. Ernie is totally car and vehicle obsessed, but rather than going for certain characters or cartoons that he might grow tired of quickly, I decided to go for a more timeless and classic car theme. Rusty orange, racing car green and retro/vintage elements were the core elements of the idea, and I wanted it to feel really cosy and warm.
His room is small, so we needed to be creative with the space. As I said, I wanted it to feel cosy, but definitely didn’t want it to feel cramped as a result. Dan built him a cabin bed which means he has a lot more floor space than he did previously. He also built him an open wardrobe (pictures coming soon), which makes the room seem a lot less cramped than it would with a traditional, full size wardrobe. Then it was a case of making the most of the walls – a shelf for books above his bed, rather than a bookcase on the floor, and we also created a wall shelving unit in the style of an old crate which works really nicely with the room.
Adding Personality
The finishing touch, as always, had to be some prints. In my opinion, wall art is essential to a room, it adds so much personality, which is exactly what I was going for. We always get our prints from Desenio as they have the most incredible selection and range. I just knew they would have something that would be perfect for the room. I could spend hours scouring the website, finding inspiration and using the gallery wall designing tool, but it actually took me almost no time at all to find the perfect finishing touches for Ernie’s room.
The first I spotted was this Red Classic Car Poster, and from then I knew the exact look I wanted to go for and quickly found this Vintage Car in Italy and to complete the look – this Scooter in Italy. I chose dark wood frames to go with them and I’m glad I did as it all goes so nicely together. I really like how easy it is to add the frames onto a Desenio order; they pop up as a suggestion when you add the prints to your basket, meaning there’s no risk of getting the wrong size and you can pick your preferred frame style and colour.
Those three prints are the perfect trio to feature in the room, and I also couldn’t resist picking up a colourful retro vibe print to go on his noticeboard too. This Space Shuttle poster is a great little pop of colour in the room, and the orange tones tie in perfectly.

Ernie’s room has now gone from the long waiting list of projects, to being one of my favourite rooms of the house. And seeing it all come together has inspired me to get cracking with other rooms and projects around the house. I’ll definitely be adding more prints from Desenio as I go too as I saw so many that I have seen so many that I love on the website and they’re just the perfect way of making this house feel like our home.
Do you have any renovation projects on the go currently?
